Lions vs. Ravens Delivers One of ESPN’s Biggest Monday Night Football Audiences

The Week 3 showdown between the Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens on September 22 proved to be one of the most-watched Monday Night Football broadcasts in ESPN’s history. Averaging an audience of 22,847,000 viewers across ESPN, ABC, ESPN Deportes, and NFL+, the matchup now ranks as the network’s most-watched Week 3 MNF game and stands among the four most-viewed broadcasts since ESPN took over Monday Night Football in 2006.

In historical context, the Lions-Ravens contest has outdrawn more than 340 Monday Night Football games aired on ESPN over the last two decades. Only three games have surpassed its numbers: the 2023 Super Bowl rematch between the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, ESPN’s 2023 Christmas night special featuring the Ravens and 49ers, and Week 17 of that same season when the Lions faced the Cowboys.

The game also delivered major peaks in audience engagement. Viewership spiked at 25.4 million late in the first half, underscoring the draw of two playoff-caliber teams going head-to-head on primetime television. ESPN2’s alternate broadcast, “Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli,” added further depth to the night, averaging 887,000 viewers—a 6% increase compared to the Manning brothers’ Week 1 show. Meanwhile, Monday Night Countdown brought in 1.7 million viewers as fans tuned in early to preview the action.

These numbers emphasize the continued dominance of the NFL in live entertainment. Even in an era where streaming platforms have fragmented audiences, marquee football matchups remain cultural events that consistently deliver massive viewership. The Lions-Ravens game serves as a reminder that Monday Night Football still holds a unique and powerful place in American sports, blending tradition with unmatched live drama.
